This board is designed to get the dog to gradually accept the flyball box. The flyball box makes a noise as it expells the ball. This noise can be daunting to some dog. The beginners box is designed to overcome this problem as well as getting the dog comfortable enough to step on a box.
Start with small easy steps.
Remeber to reward desired behaviour with heaps of praise, food or a game and more importantly to ignore any mistakes the dog makes.
Keep training time short depending on your dog's attention span. Fifteen minutes is usually enough and make it fun.
First establish the way your dog prefers to turn when picking up a ball from the ground. Hold your dog and throw the ball. Release your dog and ask him/her to fetch the ball. Watch the way the dog turns when picking up the ball. Repeat this many times until there is a majority of turns either to the left or right. This is your dogs preferred turning direction.
Place a peg in the ground and get your dog used to going around the peg on it's preferred turning circle.
Place the peg in front of the box which is flat on the ground. Don't introduce a ball at this stage. Ask the dog to go around the peg and over the board.
Raise the board 10cm at a time as the dog gets more confident.
When you have raised the board to a gentle slope you can start to introduce the ball. You may decide to introduce your dog to the flyball box at this stage. If you would like to continue on the beginners box/turning board place a piece of velcro about half way up the board either on the left or right depending on the direction the dog turns. Place a tennis ball on the velcro and ask your dog to fetch the ball as he/she goes around on the boardl. This may take many attempts depending on how motivated your dog is to retrieve a ball.
Your dog is now confident on the box, can do a swimmers turn, and can take the ball from the box.You and your dog are ready to move on to the next step.
